What is Celestia?
Celestia (TIA) is a blockchain designed for one specific job: making transaction data available so that other blockchains can be built on top of it. Instead of doing everything itself, Celestia handles ordering and storing data, while separate rollups and app-specific chains handle their own transaction execution.
This modular approach lets developers launch a new blockchain without building and securing an entire validator network from scratch. Celestia uses a technique called data availability sampling, where light nodes can check that data has been published by downloading only small random pieces of it. That lets the network scale its capacity as more nodes join.
Celestia launched its mainnet in October 2023 and is built with the Cosmos SDK. TIA is used to pay for publishing data, called blobspace, and for staking and governance. Many rollups now use Celestia as their data layer, which ties demand for TIA to how much data those networks publish.
