What is THORChain?

THORChain (RUNE) is a cross-chain decentralized exchange that lets users swap native assets between different blockchains, such as bitcoin for ether, without wrapped tokens or centralized custodians. It supports networks including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP Ledger, Dogecoin and BNB Chain.

The network is built with the Cosmos SDK, and its nodes jointly control vaults on each connected chain. Every liquidity pool pairs an asset with RUNE, which also has to be bonded by node operators to secure the network. THORChain has faced setbacks, including the suspension of its lending product in 2025, and has been criticized for handling funds linked to hacks.
