What is Plasma?
Plasma (XPL) is a layer-1 blockchain built specifically for stablecoin payments, with a focus on Tether's USDT. Its main selling point is that simple USDT transfers can be made with no fee for the user, which makes it practical for everyday payments and remittances.
The network is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so existing Ethereum apps and tools can run on it, and it uses its own fast consensus protocol called PlasmaBFT. Plasma also lets users pay transaction fees in approved tokens such as USDT instead of having to hold the native coin, and it plans a bridge that brings bitcoin onto the chain.
The project is backed by investors including Founders Fund and Bitfinex, and its mainnet beta launched in September 2025 with billions of dollars in stablecoin deposits. XPL is used to pay for transactions that are not covered by the zero-fee option, to reward validators and to secure the network through staking.
