What is IOTA?
IOTA is a distributed ledger project that started in 2016 with a focus on the Internet of Things and feeless transactions. Its original design used a structure called the Tangle, a directed acyclic graph rather than a traditional chain of blocks.
In 2025 IOTA moved to a new layer-1 based on the Move programming language, adding smart contracts, staking and very low fees. The IOTA Foundation, based in Germany, focuses on real-world uses such as digital trade documents and supply chains, including the TWIN project for cross-border trade.
