What is TerraClassicUSD?

TerraClassicUSD (USTC) is the original UST stablecoin of the Terra blockchain, renamed after the network collapsed in May 2022. UST was an algorithmic stablecoin that relied on a mint-and-burn mechanism with LUNA, now LUNC, to hold a dollar peg; when large withdrawals hit, the mechanism failed and both tokens lost almost all their value.

Terra's founders later started a new chain, while the old one continued as Terra Classic. USTC no longer has a working peg mechanism and trades freely at market prices. It is used within the Terra Classic ecosystem for trading, fees and DeFi. The collapse led to legal action, including fraud charges in the United States against Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon.
