What is Sei?

Sei (SEI) is a layer-1 blockchain built for speed, with a focus on trading and other applications where fast confirmation matters. Its mainnet launched in 2023 with transactions finalizing in well under a second.

Sei started in the Cosmos ecosystem and later added a parallelized Ethereum Virtual Machine in its V2 upgrade. This lets developers deploy Ethereum-style smart contracts on Sei while the network processes many transactions at the same time instead of one after another. The team has since moved to make Sei an EVM-only chain and is working on its Giga upgrade, which aims to raise throughput far beyond current levels.

SEI is used to pay transaction fees, to stake with validators that secure the network and to vote on governance proposals. The network hosts DeFi apps, games and NFT projects, and it has been named in partnerships involving stablecoins and tokenized assets.
