What is Peercoin?

Peercoin (PPC) is one of the earliest cryptocurrencies, launched in 2012 by the pseudonymous developer Sunny King together with Scott Nadal. It was the first cryptocurrency to introduce proof of stake, the consensus method now used by many major blockchains.

Peercoin is based on Bitcoin's code but uses a hybrid model: new coins are created through both proof-of-work mining and proof-of-stake minting, in which holders earn new coins for keeping their coins online. There is no hard cap on supply, but transaction fees are destroyed rather than paid out, which offsets inflation. PPC is used as a payment currency and for staking.
