What is LayerZero?
LayerZero (ZRO) is the token of LayerZero, an interoperability protocol that lets applications on different blockchains send messages to each other. With it, a token, a lending market or a game can work across Ethereum, its layer-2 networks, Solana, BNB Chain and many other chains as if they were one system.
The protocol launched in 2022 and is used by many projects to issue omnichain fungible tokens (OFTs), which move between chains without the wrapped copies common in older bridges. Applications choose their own security setup by picking which independent verifier networks must confirm each message, rather than trusting a single bridge operator.
ZRO was released in June 2024 through an airdrop to users of LayerZero-powered apps. It is used for protocol governance, including decisions about a possible fee switch that would let the protocol earn revenue from message traffic.
