What is JPY Coin v1?

JPY Coin v1 (JPYC) is the original version of JPYC, a yen-pegged token issued by JPYC Inc. in Japan from 2021. It was structured under Japanese law as a prepaid payment instrument, so it could be used for purchases but was not directly redeemable for yen in the same way as a regulated stablecoin.

The token runs on Ethereum, Polygon, Gnosis and other networks. JPYC Inc. later launched a new, redeemable yen stablecoin under Japan's 2025 framework, which is listed separately.
