IOST (IOST) is the native token of IOST, a smart contract blockchain that launched its mainnet in 2019 after a token sale in early 2018, backed by investors including Sequoia China and Matrix Partners. It was designed for high transaction throughput so that online services could run on a public chain.
IOST originally introduced a consensus method called Proof-of-Believability, which selects block producers using factors such as token holdings, reputation and network contribution, later operating with a vote-based model where holders elect producers. The token pays for network resources and transactions, is staked to vote for nodes and earn rewards, and supports governance.
