What is ALEO?

ALEO (ALEO) is the native token of Aleo, a Layer 1 blockchain built for private applications using zero-knowledge proofs. Applications run computations off-chain and submit only a proof that the result is correct, so user data and transaction details can stay private by default. The project was co-founded by Howard Wu and raised funding from investors including a16z, and its mainnet launched in September 2024.

Developers write programs in Leo, a language designed by the Aleo team. The network uses a proof-of-stake consensus called AleoBFT and also rewards provers who generate zero-knowledge proofs. ALEO is used for fees, staking and rewards.
