What Is Crypto Market Cap and Why It Matters

Market cap is the number every crypto ranking is sorted by. Here is how it is calculated, what it tells you, and the traps that make a big number misleading.

The short version

Market cap is price × circulating supply. A coin trading at $3 with 200 million coins in circulation has a market cap of $600 million. It is the standard way to compare the size of cryptocurrencies, and it is how our main ranking is ordered.

Why price alone is misleading

New buyers often look for "cheap" coins with a low price per unit. But a coin at $0.0001 is not cheaper than one at $50,000 in any useful sense: it simply has far more units. What matters is the total value the market puts on all of them.

If a $0.001 coin has 500 trillion units, it would need a market cap of $500 billion to reach one cent. That is bigger than almost every company on Earth.

Before you think "this could go to $1", multiply the target price by the supply and ask whether that total is realistic.

What market cap does not tell you

It is not money in the bank

Market cap uses the last trade price for every coin in circulation. If holders tried to sell even a fraction at once, the price would fall. For small coins with little liquidity, the true exit value can be a small share of the headline number.

Supply figures are often estimates

Circulating supply is reported by projects themselves, and definitions vary. Tokens held by the team or locked in contracts may or may not be counted.

Future supply is ignored

A coin can look small while most of its tokens are still to come. That is what fully diluted valuation captures. See market cap vs FDV.

How to use it well

  • Compare coins in the same category, such as Layer 1s with Layer 1s, using our categories.
  • Check the volume / market cap ratio: a large market cap with almost no trading is fragile.
  • Look at FDV next to market cap to see how much dilution lies ahead.
  • Watch the total market cap and Bitcoin dominance to understand the market as a whole.

Market cap is a starting point, not a verdict. It tells you how big the market thinks a coin is today, nothing more.
