About TornadoCash
Tornado Cash (TORN) is the governance token of Tornado Cash, a privacy tool on Ethereum that breaks the visible link between the sender and receiver of a transaction. Users deposit funds into a pool and later withdraw to a different address using a zero-knowledge proof.
In August 2022 the US Treasury sanctioned Tornado Cash, saying it had been used to launder funds, including by North Korea's Lazarus Group. The sanctions were lifted in March 2025 after court rulings. Developer Alexey Pertsev was convicted in the Netherlands in 2024, and co-founder Roman Storm was found guilty of one charge in the US in 2025. TORN holders vote on protocol governance.
